How The Tax Shack Had Their Best Tax Season Ever with SEO, Paid Ads & Email Marketing

The Client

The Tax Shack is not your typical tax prep office. Their mission is simple: provide exceptional tax services by staying updated on laws, regulations, and compliance standards, while delivering outstanding customer care and creating real value for their clients. Guided by their motto “Friends don’t let friends do their own taxes,” The Tax Shack was created to offer a welcoming space where clients can confidently navigate their finances and maximize their tax returns.

Over the years, they’ve grown steadily, supported by the trust and referrals of their clients. In 2016, they proudly opened their San Fernando office, serving individuals and businesses year-round with tax preparation, payroll, bookkeeping, and more.

Now with two locations, Encino, CA and Las Vegas, NV, they’re growing their business upon three core values: quality, urgency, and availability. These aren’t just words on a wall. They show up in the way clients are treated from the first call to the final signature.

What sets The Tax Shack apart is their people-first personality. In an industry that’s usually stiff and corporate, Tax Shack’s team leads with warmth, expertise, and an energy that turns first-time clients into loyal regulars. That identity extends to everything they do including their marketing.

They had built a solid reputation through word of mouth and a growing social media presence. But their digital footprint wasn’t keeping pace with the quality of the business behind it.

The Challenge

When we started working with The Tax Shack, the picture was clear:

  • 26 organic keywords ranking in search, mostly branded terms of people search directly for them or directly in their area and not broad terms like “tax preparation” or “back tax help”
  • 26 Google reviews at the Encino location, 3 in Las Vegas, a low volume despite being in business for 10 years and serving hundreds of clients annually.
  • Minimal blog content targeting the questions their clients were actually searching
  • Minimal email marketing — they wanted a strategy and a regular email cadence to stay top-of-mind with existing clients
  • Minimal paid advertising — they wanted to do paid ads when and where it would actually drive results
  • AI visibility score of 14 — meaning ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Gemini were minimally citing or referencing their content

They had a great business. We just needed to supercharge their online presence beyond just social media, which they were already doing very well through helpful, engaging content.

The Approach

Client Magnet CRM took a holistic approach: affordable SEO, paid ads, and email marketing working together rather than in isolation. Each channel reinforced the others.

SEO & Content

We built out a full content strategy targeting the questions The Tax Shack’s clients were already searching for. New service pages, optimized blog posts targeting California-specific tax topics, and technical SEO improvements across the site.

The content strategy leaned into The Tax Shack’s specific expertise: CTEC-certified preparation, bilingual service, small business taxes, IRS help, and California-specific deductions that national platforms like TurboTax don’t address with the same depth or local nuance.

Every piece of content was written to serve a real searcher with a real question, not just to fill a content calendar.

Paid Advertising

We launched Meta ad campaigns across Facebook and Instagram, designed around The Tax Shack’s authentic personality. The ads leaned into what makes Tax Shack different: approachable, real, and genuinely good at saving people money, rather than the stiff and boring corporate aesthetic most tax prep advertising defaults to.

Email Marketing

Using GoHighLevel, we built out automated email workflows for The Tax Shack’s existing client base: appointment follow-ups, review requests, seasonal campaigns, and re-engagement sequences. The goal was to stay top-of-mind with people who already trusted The Tax Shack so they came back and brought people with them.

Social Media

The Tax Shack’s social media team came into the partnership with a clear vision: showcase the people behind the brand. Using GoHighLevel’s content calendar and social planner, they pushed consistent content across all major platforms with a focus on Instagram Reels featuring their team members speaking directly to their areas of expertise.

The content was structured and intentional: Motivational Mondays, Tax Tip Tuesdays, and Wisdom Wednesdays. Each reel is designed to educate, inspire, and keep The Tax Shack top of mind with their audience throughout tax season. The content reinforces what makes The Tax Shack different: real people, real expertise, no corporate jargon.

Their goal was to hit 1,000 Instagram followers by the end of tax season. They hit it.

Review Automation

We set up an automated review request system that sends a personalized follow-up to clients after their appointment, making it effortless to leave a Google review. Simple, consistent, and effective.

The Results

SEO

Keywords grew from 26 to 83 — a 219% increase in organic keyword rankings in under 4 months. New keywords span local searches across Encino and Los Angeles as well as broader California tax topics.

Rankings continued climbing even after tax season ended! This is a sign that the content is compounding, not just spiking seasonally.

The Encino local keyword cluster went from essentially invisible to multiple top-20 rankings simultaneously, and the momentum is still building post-tax season with no additional spend.

  • California small business tax incentives 2026 — position 2 on both desktop and mobile
  • Back taxes Encino — position 10 desktop and mobile (new)
  • Tax help Encino — position 12 desktop and mobile (new)
  • Tax preparer Encino — position 14 desktop, 13 mobile (new)
  • Tax services Encino — position 16 desktop, 15 mobile (new), position 7 Local Finder
  • Tax preparation Encino — position 17 desktop and mobile (new)
  • Tax preparation Sherman Oaks — position 19 desktop (new) — geographic expansion beginning
  • California sole proprietorship taxes 2026 — position 33 mobile (new)
  • Student loan interest deduction 2026position 4, ranking above TurboTax, Fidelity, and Irs.gov, H&R Block, and Jackson Hewitt
Tax Shack ranking no4 for a competitive keyword above irs.gov and turbotax

That last result deserves its own moment. A local tax prep office with two locations ranking on page 1 of Google for a nationally competitive financial keyword next to some of the most recognized brands in finance. That’s what quality content does. That’s where the magic of SEO reveals itself.

the tax shack google search console results up

GSC impressions up 45% and clicks up 37% in the last 28 days alone, with 20,500 impressions and 122 clicks in a single month. When tax season wrapped up, the traffic didn’t disappear and the clicks didn’t stop coming, they actually increased because financial matters and tax expertise are relevant year round. With the right content, you can be the answer to search queries well beyond just tax season.

Local Map Pack Rankings WAY up in under 4 months! On February 14th, the local rankings for “tax preparer encino” was a sea of red. Averaging position 16.4 on the Google Map Pack, depending on where the searcher was in relation to their Encino office. On June 14, it’s a sea of green. Average position of 3.7 on the Google Map Pack. That’s local SEO in action. In a few weeks/months we anticipate this will literally be all green, but posting here now because we’re so proud of the results!

AI Visibility

AI visibility score jumped from 14 to 35! A 60% increase in how often ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Gemini cite or reference The Tax Shack content. Cited pages grew from 13 to 32 and mentions (when Tax Shack comes up as a query answer in LLM conversation) are now at 5. As AI search continues to evolve, being cited as a trusted source is increasingly valuable for discovery.

Google Reviews

Encino location: went from 26 reviews → 58 reviews! Doubled in 4 months through automated post-appointment thank you emails with polite review requests.

Las Vegas location: went from 3 reviews → 8 reviews. Also doubled in 4 months.

More reviews mean stronger SEO. We’re talking local pack visibility, higher trust for new clients comparing options, and better Google algorithm signals for local ranking. The best thing you can do for your small business is get more reviews on a regular basis from happy customers. And we’re more than happy to make that run automatically, so you don’t have to remember to ask.

Paid Advertising

Meta campaigns generated:

  • 935,000+ impressions across Facebook and Instagram
  • 28,220 clicks
  • $0.23 average CPC! An amazing and efficient cost per click for the tax preparation category
  • $23.68 CPM! Strong reach!

The very effective and FUN campaigns leaned into Tax Shack’s authentic personality and drove real brand awareness across Los Angeles and Las Vegas throughout all of tax season.

Email Marketing

  • 6,299 emails delivered across automated workflows and campaigns
  • 39.13% open rate nearly double the industry average for financial services email
  • 2,465 total opens

A 40% open rate means that when Tax Shack shows up in someone’s inbox, they open it. That’s the result of sending relevant, well-timed email to people who actually want to hear from the business. We’re not mass blasting a cold list. We’re working intentionally and creating email campaigns that are meant to be read and drive conversions.

The Outcome

Tax Shack had the best tax season in the history of their business! They filed more returns than any previous year.

No single channel gets sole credit for that. The paid ads drove awareness. The SEO content built trust and captured high-intent searchers. The email marketing kept existing clients engaged and coming back. The social media team brought The Tax Shack’s personality to life and grew a real Instagram following. The reviews built credibility for anyone comparing options. All of it worked together.

That’s the holistic approach Client Magnet CRM takes with every client. Not one lever. All of them, pulled together, in the right order.
